Died: January 29, 1891 in New York City, New York
William Windom (1827-1891) was Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Garfield and Arthur from March 7, 1881 to October 26, 1881 and under Benjamin Harrison from 1889 to his death in 1891. He also represented Minnesota in the House (1859-1869) and the U.S. Senate (1870-1871, 1871-1881, 1881-1883). After an unsuccessful bid for reelection in 1882, Windom moved to New York to practice law. Windom was an advocate of bimetallism, a currency backed by both gold and silver, a position his Republican Party would soon repudiate in favor of strict adherence to a gold standard, but his picture appears on $2.00 silver certificates. He was the great, great grandfather of actor William Windom.
