Willie Hernandez (born Guillermo Hernandez Villanueva in Aguada, Puerto Rico in 1954) is a retired Major League pitcher. He played major league ball from 1977 to 1989, mostly with the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. Hernandez is a three-time All Star from 1984 to 1986, but 1984 was inarguably his best year. He was Cy Young Award winner in 1984 as well as American League Most Valuable Player, and he tallied some of his best numbers that year, with 32 saves (third in the American League that year), 112 strikeouts and a seasonal ERA of 1.92. He also pitched closer for the Tigers in their successful World Series bid in 1984. He has a career ERA of 3.38 and a 70-63 record with 788 strikeouts, 147 saves, 58 putouts and 169 assists.
