Winton M. Blount (1921-2001) was US Postmaster General under President Nixon (1969-1972), the last Postmaster General with a seat in the President's Cabinet. He oversaw the transition to the semi-autonomous US Postal Service. Blount was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for US Senate from Alabama in 1972. A young George W. Bush transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to be political director of his campaign. The company Blount had founded as Blount Brothers Construction in 1946, and to which he returned in 1973, was sold to Lehmann Brothers for $1.35 billion in 1999.
