Biography
Wole Soyinka became the first African writer and the first Black writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was imprisoned (1967-1969) in Nigeria for his writings. Soyinka went into exile in 1994 following the annulment of Nigeria's 1993 democratic elections and the assumption of power by military dictator Sani Abacha. On verso, stamp indicates photo was taken in October of 1997.
