Biography
Actor Yul Brynner (1915-1988) was born on Sakhalin Island, Russia. After performing in various entertainment roles in Paris, he came to the U.S. in 1940. He appeared in several successful films, including Anastasia and The Ten Commandments (both 1956), The Magnificent Seven (1960) and Westworld (1973). He's best known as the stage and screen star of The King and I (1956 film), the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical for which he won a Tony Award (1951) and then an Oscar (1956). He starred in nationwide revival tours of the play in 1977 and 1985. Other screen credits include a reprisal of his role as the Gunslinger from Westworld (1973) in the sequel Futureworld (1976).
