Zona Gale (1874-1938), who wrote short stories, novels, biographies, poetry and plays, was the first female playwright on Broadway (Miss Lula Bett, 1920, a dramatization of her novel) and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (for the same work, 1921). Gale was active in reform movements, including the women's suffrage campaign. A frequent theme of her novels was the frustration of women with their lack of opportunities.
