Biography
Hungarian scholar Szigmond Varga (1886-1956), was a theologian and religion historian. After receiving his Doctorate in Theology in 1911, he became a private professor of Humanities. Later he went on to teach at the Theological Institute. Varga published multiple works, including General History of Religion (1932-1934), Biblical History of Religion (1938) andSumerian (Babylon) Heritage Religious Life of the Ural-Altaic Peoples (1925). Varga did groundbreaking research on the language of ancient Sumeria. His book, From a Distance of Five Thousand Years (1920), argued that ancient Sumerian, the first written language, was part of the widely scattered language family which includes modern Hungarian. An illness and premature paralysis caused him to stop writing later in life.
