SIGRID GURIE
Vintage photo in a long-sleeved sweater, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. A rare signature.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Saul/Best Wishes/Sigrid Gurie/40". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature exactly: July 19, 1940. Sigrid Gurie (1911-1969), born in Brooklyn to Norwegian parents and raised in Scandanavia, came to Hollywood in 1936, billed as "the new Garbo" and "the siren of the fjords." Her major film roles included The Adventures of Marco Polo and Algiers (both 1938), Three Faces West (1940, as John Wayne's love interest) and Voice in the Wind (1944). Her brother, Knut Hauikelid, was a leader of the Norwegian resistance to German occupation, and she appeared in the Norwegian-language film based on his book Skis Against the Atom, recounting the raid on a German heavy water facility which could have been used in production of atomic bombs. Leaving the film industry, she became a successful painter and jewelry maker. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Signature beaded but legible. Ink stamp on verso. Otherwise, Fine condition.
