SIMON LAKE
Simon Lake signs a stock certificate for ten shares in The Lake Sub-Marine Company.
Partly Printed Stock Certificate signed: "Simon Lake" as President, 1p, 10½x8¼. (New Jersey), 1900 May 15. In part: "This Certifies that Henry J. Ely is the owner of Ten Shares of One hundred Dollars each of the Capital Stock of The Lake Sub-Marine Company, Full Paid and Non-assessable transferable only on the Books of the Corporation in person or by Attorney on surrender of this Certificate." Endorsed on verso: "Henry J. Ely/June 2nd 1907". Three years earlier, Simon Lake (1866-1945) had built the Argonaut, the first submarine to operate successfully in the open sea. In 1901, the Argonaut was followed by the Protector, a surprisingly modern torpedo boat design that was adopted by the U.S. Navy during WWI. Lake, who supplied over 100 submarines for the war effort, also helped to design a practical periscope and invented submarine apparatus for recovering sunken vessels and their cargoes. Folds, one vertical fold touching "i" in Simon. File holes in left and right borders. Tip of right corner missing. ¼-inch slit in green seal, all intact. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
