SINA MESDAG-VAN HOUTEN
Handwritten, signed receipt of Dutch painter Sina Mesdag-van Houten,
wife of Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Extremely rare!
Receipt signed: "S. Mesdag-van Houten", in brown ink, 7x4¼.
Partially signed over postage stamp. No place, no date. Receipt of sale for two
water color paintings, in full: "Received from Mrs. Lucien Carr
for/two water colour drawings./ One hundred twenty five florin./250 franks."
Sina Mesdag-van Houten (1834-1909) was a Dutch painter and the wife of
Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem. Always a supportive wife, she began
painting after she lost her only son when he was only 8 years old. Her water
color paintings became popular in the late 1880s, receiving gold and bronze
medals for her landscape paintings in 1884. Her 1893 exhibition in Chicago
won her U.S. fame. In 1905 her 70th birthday was celebrated with an honorary
exhibition at Pulchri Studio. Partially signed over postage stamp.
Creased and toned. Small tear at lower edge at crease. Pencil note (unknown
hand) at lower margin and on verso (no show through). Otherwise, Fine
condition.
