Sir Alan Bates (1934-2003) established himself as a powerful
screen presence, beginning in the 1960s with such films as Zorba the
Greek (1964), The Fixer (his only Oscar nomination, as Best Actor,
1969) and Women in Love (1969). His other films include Gosford
Park (2000) and The Sum of All Fears (2002). Bates also won two
Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play, in 1973 for Butley and 2002 for
Fortune's Fool. He was awarded with a knighthood in the Queens' New
Year's Eve 2002 Honours List. Corners slightly rounded. Ink note (unknown hand)
