ALFRED MUNNINGS
Rare signature from the Enligsh equine painter dated 1946, two years after he was elected President of the Royal Academy of Art
Signature: "Alfred Munnings/Sept. 20 46.", in black felt tip, 5x6½. Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was an English artist popularized for his horse paintings which were highly regarded by the upper-class. Originally planning to join the army in 1917 but found unfit for battle, Munnings instead was given a civilian job of processing horses from Canada to France. It was during this time that the majority of his horse paintings were produced, often depicting battles and war scenes he saw in passing. He was encouraged often to take commissions to paint portraits of society figures but preferred to focus on equine painting. In 1944, he was elected as President of the Royal Academy of Art, where he began speaking out against the rising modernism artworks. In a valedictorian speech given in 1949, Munnings related a story in which Winston Churchill had mentioned if the pair ever saw Pablo Picasso walking down the street, would Munnings assist him in kicking his "something something", to which the artist responded "Yes Sir, I would". Multiple folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Small stain on top right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
