SIR ALFRED SCOTT-GATTY The officer of arms and amateur composer signs this slip of paper Autograph Sentiment Signed: “Yours Ever/ Alfred Scott Gatty/ Rouge Dragon” 4½x2¾. Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty (1847-1918) was an officer of arms who also became a successful composer. Scott-Gatty's heraldic career commenced in 1880, when he was appointed Rouge Dragon Pursuivant of Arms In Ordinary. Eventually, in 1904, Scott-Gatty was appointed Garter Principal King of Arms. During his time with the College of Arms, he memorably reinstituted the process of granting badges to armigers. In 1911, Scott-Gatty was knighted for his services and appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). As a composer he produced two operettas: Sandford and Merton's Christmas Party (1880) and Not At Home (1886). His musical oeuvre also included three musical plays written specifically for children: Rumpelstiltskin, The Goose Girl (both in 1895) and The Three Bears (1896). In addition, his Little Songs for Little Voices was published in three volumes. Irregular left and bottom edges. Toned. Rippling throughout, but concentrated toward left-hand side. Ink slightly smeared at “s” of “Yours” and the “A” of “Alfred”. Otherwise, fine condition.
