ANTHONY HOPE HAWKINS
The Prisoner of Zenda author signs his name in pencil
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours very truly/ Anthony Hope"
in pencil. 5x2½ clipping. Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, or better known as
Anthony Hope (1863-1933) was an English novelist and playwright, author
of his world famous novels The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of
Hentzau (1898). Set in the fictional country of Ruitania, these minor
English classics helped spawn the genre known as Ruritanian romance, which
include works by Georges Remi (The Adventures of Tintin) and Frances Hodgson
Burnett (The Lost Prince). While mainly known for Zenda, Hawkins was a prolific
writer of over 35 volumes of fictional work, establishing a large fan base
throughout England during his lifetime. His notoriety earned him a job as a
propaganda writer for England during World War I, for which he was knighted in
1918. Irregularly cut. Toned. Creased throughout. Soiled. Mounting residue
on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
