SIR ARTHUR BRYANT
Card signed by the historian and biographer in blue ink
Signature: "Arthur Bryant" in blue ink. Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 5x3 card. With 1¼x1¾ b/w unsigned printed photo of Bryant affixed in top left corner. British historian and biographer Bryant (1899-1975) is probably best known for his three-volume biography of Samuel Pepys (The Man in the Making,1933; The Years of Peril, 1935; The Saviour of the Navy, 1938) and for the epic (and crowd-pleasing) style of his histories. Bryant was a bestselling author in his time, although his popularity has waned somewhat since his death. He wrote his first book in 1929, A Spirit of Conservatism, but didn't score a bestseller until 1931's King Charles the Second. His publishing career continued into the 1980s and included a three-volume history of England begun during World War II (The Years of Endurance, 1793-1802, 1942; Years of Victory 1802-1815, 1944; The Age of Elegance, 1812-1822, 1950) and of England during World War II (The Battle of Britain, The Few, 1944), a history of the United States (The American Ideal, 1936) and biographies of British royalty, military commanders and politicians. Bryant was knighted in 1954. Lightly toned. Signature is lightly smeared in places but is legible. Photo is lightly creased. Mounting residue in bottom right corner and on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
