ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE. ALS: "Your/D", ¾p, 5x7. Bignell Wood, Minstead, Lyndhurst, no year June 13. To his eldest son, Denis. Begins: "Dear old chap". In full: "There is some sort of dinner with dancing on June 21 but I think you had best stick to your work and then when that exam is over we will see if we can give you a little [several words removed] I am not clear if anyone is going with you to Cambridge. Either your mother or I might go if you are alone. We Crowborough today." Crowborough was the town in Sussex where Doyle died. He likely meant that he was going to the town that day. Sir ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859-1930) is best known for his detective stories of Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, London, and his friend, Dr. Watson. The author, doctor, soldier and campaigner for law reform also wrote historical novels, including Micah Clarke, and science fiction, such as The Lost World. DENIS PERCY STEWART CONAN DOYLE, who was born in 1909, was Doyle's third child and first son. Denis, who had two half-sisters from Doyle's 1885-1906 marriage to Louise Hawkins, had a brother and sister from his father's second marriage (1907 until Doyle's death in 1930) to Jean Leckie. Two holes, 1¼x½ each, at mid-horizontal fold, remove some words of writing. Lightly creased. Lightly soiled, ink transfer at lower left margin. Pencil note (unknown hand, no show through) on verso. Folds do not touch signature.
