ARTHUR VICARS
Signature of the British official falsely accused in the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels, and assassinated by the IRA in 1921
Signature: "Arthur Vicars , Ulster", 4x1. Arthur Vicars (1862-1921), an expert on genealogy and heraldry, made Ireland his adopted home. In 1893 he was named Ulster King of Arms, keeper of the Irish Crown Jewels, worn by the sovereign at the installation of members of the Order of St Patrick. In 1907, the jewels went missing from Dublin Castle, and Vicars was dismissed from his post. He successfully won a large libel suit against a newspaper which had accused him of complicity in the crime. Vicars remained in Ireland, frequently hosting British soldiers in his home. He was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army in 1921. His murder prompted to declare that it would any further assaults on British officials would result in retaliation against known IRA sympathizers, regardless of their involvement in the new incident. Irregularly cut edges. Toned at right edge. Mounting residue on verso. Corners worn. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
