Photograph signed: "Best wishes,/Derek Jacobi", C. 4x5¾ postcard from
the Chichester Festival Theatre. At the time of the printing (1995), Jacobi was
the Artistic Director. Classical actor Derek Jacobi (born 1938) was
invited to London by Laurence Olivier to become a founding member of the
National Theatre and play opposite Peter O'Toole in the inaugural production of
Hamlet (1963). From there, he starred in the BBC serial Man of
Straw (1972) and in 1976 I, Claudius. Primarily a stage actor, he
made his Broadway debut in The Suicide (1980). From 1982-1985 he
performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and also played Hitler in the TV
production of Inside the Third Reich (1982), appeared in The Tenth
Man with Anthony Hopkins (1988) and was the voice of Nicodemus in The
Secret of HIMH. Jacobi was Knighted in Denmark (1989) and England
(1994), won 2 Emmys (1989 & 2001), a Tony (1984), and Laurence
Olivier Award (2009) - he is truly one of the all time greats. In a 1992
interview, he said: "I've been acting for 33 years. I've proven I can do it.
So any performance now has got to be deeper and better than that, nothing to do
with ego, bravura, look-at-me acting." Fine condition.
