Record Company. Songwriter and performer John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947,
won the 1994 Oscar for Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, the 2000
Tony for Aida and six Grammy Awards, including the Legend Award in 1999. After
scoring Top 40 hits for a remarkable 26 consecutive years, beginning in 1970, John
performed Candle in the Wind at the funeral of Princess Diana (1997). Originally
dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, the new version of Candle became his biggest hit ever, selling
three million copies in the first week of its release. Despite scandals and controversies, Elton
John just rolls on and on. His 2004 album Peachtree Road was another big hit. John was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and was knighted in 1998. Matte
