SIR FRANCIS JEFFREY
The Scottish legal figure and editor of the Edinburgh Review signs this envelope addressed to a Mrs. Thomson
Autograph envelope signed: "To/Mrs. Thomson/127 Geo. Street/F Jeffrey" in black ink. 4x2½. Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850) was a Scottish judge and literary critic. He studied law at Edinburgh College and then Oxford. Jeffrey was admitted to the Scottish bar in December 1794, but he found that his Whig politics hampered his legal prospects. With the creation of the Edinburgh Review, Jeffrey became the chief editor, and the publication soon became known for its unbiased reviews of politics, social subjects, ethics or literature from the hired brilliant and independent staff of contributors, who were paid well and guided by the editor, not the publisher. Jeffrey's editorship lasted about twenty-six years, ending with the ninety-eighth publishing. He contributed 200 pieces to the Review. After he had earned a name for himself with the Edinburgh Review, Jeffrey was able to get more work in the legal sector. Jeffrey was twice, in 1820 and 1822, elected Rector of the University of Glasgow. In 1829 he was chosen dean of the Faculty of Advocates. On the return of the Whigs to power in 1830 he became Lord Advocate, and entered parliament at a by-election in January 1831 as member for the Perth burghs. His parliamentary career had won him high general esteem, and he was later elevated to the judicial bench as Lord Jeffrey in May 1834. Toned and soiled. Horizontal fold across top edge. Pencil notes (unknown hand) throughout. Wax seal affixed to verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
