Signature: "George Arthur" in brown ink. 5x1, affixed to 6x2 piece of paper. George Arthur, 1st Baronet (1784-1854) was a prominent British foreign governor who served many exotic posts over his career. Arthur began his profession during the Napoleonic Wars alongside Sir James Craig in Italy, was furthermore injured in the British attack on Rosetta, Egypt, and later participated in the Walcheren expedition in the Netherlands. After his service, Arthur was named Lieutenant governor of British Honduras (1814-1822) and later Lieutenant governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) from (1824-1836). When he returned to England in March 1837, Arthur was knighted and made Lieutenant governor of Upper Canada only months after the Upper Canada Rebellion, and finally in 1842 served as Governor of the Indian presidency of Bombay, extended British power in the flourishing colony.
