SIR GERAINT LLEWELLYN EVANS
Publicity photo of a middle-aged but still youthful Evans
Inscribed photo mount signed "Sincerely/Geraint Evans". B/w, 3¼x4
photo mounted on 3¾x5½ off-white card. Evans (1922-1992) was born in 1922 and
studied at Cardiff and London's Guildhall School of Music. After World War II,
he worked for the British Forces Radio Network in Hamburg before his operatic
debut as the night watchman in Wagner's Die Meistersinger at the Royal
Opera House in Covent Garden in 1948. The role Evans was most associated with
is the titular role in Verdi's Falstaff, which he first played in
1950 and subsequently in all major opera houses. He was also the first
British singer, since Eva Turner, to play major leading roles in Italian opera
houses on a regular basis. Evans was knighted in 1969 and retired in 1983 to
work as an operatic stage director. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine
condition.
