HARRIE MASSEY
The acclaimed nuclear physicist pens a letter to a professor
regarding the use of his work
Autograph Letter signed: "HSW Massey" in blue ink. One page.
5¾x8¼. University College London, 1978 September 12. On letterhead of
Department of Physics and Astronomy to "Dear Professor Gilde". In
full: "I am sure you will have given up hope of receiving a reply to your
very kind letter of March 29. Part of the delay was because the letter arrived
when I was away in Australia and it was mislaid for some time. I am most
gratified that you have found some of my work useful and would be interested to
hear which have been of most value to you. I endorse two autographed reprints
[not included] which I hope might be in your field of interest. With best
wishes. Yours sincerely". Sir Harrie Stewart Wilson Massey
(1908-1983), who often signed his name HSW, was an Australian-born
mathematical physicist. His early work was concentrated on atomic physics.
Later, he worked in atmospheric physics. In 1938, Massey accepted a chair of
mathematics at University College London, becoming head of the physics
department (later merged with the astronomy department) in 1950. The author of
several books, he headed the British National Committee for Space
Research, and helped found the European Space Research Organization.
