Henry Irving (1838-1905) was a famed English actor, noted for his
innovative performance of Shakespearean roles. (He was the first to perform
Shylock, for example, in a dignified, non-stereotyped way.) Associated with
the Lyceum Theatre from 1870, he took control of the theatre (with actress Ellen
Terry) in 1878 and immediately invited his lifelong friend, Dracula
author Bram Stoker to join the company. Horizontal and vertical mailing folds.
Creased and toned. Paper residue (previous mounting) on verso with show-through
at top left corner.
