Hugh Walpole addresses an envelope to Mr. Nicholas Carroll.
Autograph Envelope, unsigned, 4¾x3¾. Embossed British postage,
postmarked Keswick, Cumberland, September 8, 1931. Addressed by Walpole
to: "Mr. Nicholas Carroll/367 Lebanon St./Malden/Mass: USA". New
Zealand-born British author and occasional actor Hugh Walpole (1884-1941)
wrote the screenplay and appeared as the Vicar in the 1935 classic, David
Copperfield. He was also the screenwriter for Little Lord
Fauntleroy (1936) and is credited as the book or story author for Kind
Lady, Vanessa and Vanessa, Her Love Story (all 1935), Mr.
Perrin and Mr. Traill (1948) and Kind Lady (1951). Known primarily as
an author, he wrote Judith Paris, the second in his Herries Chronicles
in 1931. Other books in the series included Rogue Herries (1930),
The Fortress (1932) and Vanessa (1933). The main setting for the
later book was Brackenburn, the home Walpole had purchased in 1923. He
expanded Brackenburn to eventually house his library of over 30,000 books and
his collection of paintings. Lightly creased, slightly soiled. Ink smudged at
three words (all legible). Nicked at mid-lower edge. Overall, fine
condition.
