HUGH WALPOLE
Shown as the vicar from David Copperfield, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/Hugh Walpole". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: August 9, 1935. New Zealand-born British author and occasional actor Hugh Walpole (1884-1941) wrote the screenplay and appeared as the Vicar in the 1935 classic, David Copperfield. He was also the screenwriter for Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936) and is credited as the book or story author for Kind Lady, Vanessa and Vanessa, Her Love Story (all 1935), Mr. Perrin and Mr. Traill (1948) and Kind Lady (1951). He is also known for his Herries Chronicles, which include Rogue Herries (1930), Judith Paris (1931), The Fortress (1932) and Vanessa (1933). The main setting for the later book was Brackenburn, the home Walpole had purchased in 1923. He expanded Brackenburn to eventually house his library of over 30,000 books and his collection of paintings. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
