HUMPHRY DAVY. ALS: "H. Davy", 1p, 4½x7. No place, no date. Friday Morg. Integral leaf addressed to "Mr Johnson/St Pauls Ch Yard", partial "23 de" postmark. In full: "I have not lately heard of Dr Roget, & I understood that He was gone to the Continent." Dr. Roget was, most probably, PETER MARK ROGET, English physician and scholar, member of the Royal Society and instrumental in establishing the University of London. He is best known today for modern editions of his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. Sir HUMPHRY DAVY, an English chemist, was President of the Royal Society from 1820-1827. In 1799, he discovered the exhilarating effect of nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") when inhaled. He discovered the elements potassium (1807), sodium (1807), barium (1808) and calcium (1808). Davy also explained the bleaching action of chlorine and showed that diamond is carbon. He was only 51 when he died in 1829. Lightly creased. Folds, horizontal fold touches the "H", "D". Several pinhead-size stains in blank areas. Leaf is shaded, lightly soiled with wax remnants at corners. Overall, fine condition.
