HUMPHRY DAVY. ALS: "H. Davy", 1½p, 4¼x7. No place, no year, February 24th. To F. Bailly, Esq. In full: "I think it probable that the Council of the Royal Society will wish to take your opinion on Thursday next in a proposed addition to the Nautical Alminack. Could you make it convenient to be at the Apartments of the Royal Society at ½ past three Thursday." Davy had this hand delivered to Bailly. On integral address leaf Davy wrote: "F. Bailly Esqr." Beneath is a secretarial note to Bailly, forwarding the letter. English chemist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) pioneered the study of electrochemistry. In 1799, he discovered the exhilarating effect of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) when inhaled. Electrolytic methods yielded him the elements sodium, potassium and calcium (1807-1808). Davy also recognized the element nature of chlorine and gave it its name (1810). He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1803 and was awarded the prestigious Copely Medal in 1805. Lightly creased. Slightly stained and soiled. Pencil notes (unknown hand), at lower left of first page. Address leaf is soiled, creased, worn. Tape remnant at blank upper margin. Upper left corner missing, and ¼x¼-inch piece missing from lower left blank area, where seal has been removed, remnants of red seal remain.
