The chemist forwards to the Royal Society a sample and letter from the Russian Ambassador.
Third Person Autograph Letter signed "Sir H. Davy", 1p with integral mailing leaf, 7¼x9. Park St., January 12, n.y. Also signed in address on verso: "The Council/of the Royal Society/[from] H Davy". In full: Sir H. Davy being prevented from attending the Council by severe illness which confines him to his room takes the liberty of laying before them a letter from the Russian Ambassador with some specimens of Platinum." Ink note below text (unknown hand): "died 1829." English chemist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) pioneered the study of electrochemistry. In 1799, he discovered the exhilarating effect of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) when inhaled. Electrolytic methods yielded him the elements sodium, potassium and calcium (1807-1808). He also recognized the element nature of chlorine and gave it its name (1810). He invented the miner's safety lamp, called the Davy Lamp in 1815. Lightly creased. Minor ink transfer. Light mailing folds. One-half inch tear on address leaf where seal was broken. (Black wax seal still present.) Overall, fine condition.
