Third Person Autograph Letter signed twice "Mr. Davy" in text, 1 page, 6½x8. No place, Wednesday, n. d. In full: "Mr. Davy is very sorry that it will not be in his power to wait on Miss Benger this evening. He is prevented by a violent cold which renders which renders it impossible for him to be out at night. Mr. Davy hopes soon to have the pleasure of paying his respects to Miss Benger". Ink notation of his name (unknown hand) at top of page. English chemist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) pioneered the study of electrochemistry. In 1799, he discovered the exhilarating effect of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) when inhaled. Electrolytic methods yielded him the elements sodium, potassium and calcium (1807-1808). Davy also recognized the element nature of chlorine and gave it its name (1810). He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1803 and was awarded the prestigious Copley Medal in 1805. Toned and creased. Corners worn. Irregularly cut edges. Mounting residue at left edge on verso. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
