Queen Victoria's personal physician extends an invitation to a dinner
of medical friends
Autograph Letter signed: "Ja. Clark", 2 pages (front and
verso), 4½x7½. Brook Street (London), 1845 July 25 "Friday
evening". To "Mr. Scanlon" [?]. In full: "I have just heard
of your return to London, and hope you will give me the pleasure of your company
at dinner today. Mr. Phelps Crampton & a few more medical friends dine with
me. We dine at a quarter after seven o'clock. Yours truly". Sir James
Clark (1788-1870), originally a naval surgeon, made a studied the effects
of climate on the cure of diseases, and also recommended mineral cures.
After setting up practice in Rome, he treated tubercular poet John Keats,
and is blamed by some modern biographers for hastening Keats' death. In 1837,
he became Physician-in-Ordinary to Queen Victoria, retaining that post until
his retirement in 1860. He became an influential advisor to the Queen and to
Prince Albert on medical and other matters. Brook Street is located in the
exclusive Mayfair district of London. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Mounting
