JAMES DEWAR.
ALS: "James Dewar," 11/2p, 41/2x7, separate sheets. Cambridge, 1896 November 25. Begins: "Dear Boss." In part: "No I regret to say I don't. We have some crystals about the R.I....I will be in town ...You ought to turn up at the Royal Society Meeting. Fleming and I have a Paper on the...of Liquid Oxygen." Dewar's handwriting is difficult to read. Dewar was Professor of Natural Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge (1875-1923) and of Chemistry at the Royal Institution (R.I.) in London (1877-1923). In lower blank area, in a contemporary hand: "Professor Dewar, the celebrated chemist who succeeded in liquifying air at a temperature of about 400 F below zero." Two years after this letter was written, the Scottish chemist and physicist became the first scientist to produce liquid hydrogen. He invented the Dewar vessel, forerunner of the vacuum bottle. In 1902, Dewar discovered that the absorbent power of charcoal for gases is increased by cold. Light soiling. Mounting remnants cover blank verso of first page. Light ink transference in blank area.
