Autograph letter signed: "J.P. Kay-Shuttleworth" in black ink. 3 pages integral leaf, 4½x7 folded. Gawthorpe Hall, Burnley, Lancashire, England. November 9, 1863. In part: "Lord [Fanwith] tells me you have the Papers on the Exhibitions for Common Things. You are to much oblige me by making a copy of them...I hope you are well...Faithfully yours". Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Baronet (1804-1877) was a British politician and educationalist. Initially studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, he settled in Manchester were he founded the Manchester Statistical Society, and furthermore published (as Dr. James Kay), The moral and physical condition of the working-class employed in the cotton manufacture in Manchester (1832), a piece that would eventually be cited by Friedrich Engels in Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. He founded the Battersea Normal College for the training of teachers of pauper children, which today is the University of St. Mark & St. John, which is considered the first training college for school teachers. Poor health led to a life of mostly writing, writing the standard textbook Physiology, Pathology and Treatment of Asphyxia, and becoming extremely involved with the movements of the Liberal Party. He was created baronet of Gawthorpe Hall in the County Palatine of Lancaster in 1849. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Creased throughout. Stains throughout. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
