Photograph signed: "John/M. Hare". Sepia, 4x6¼. Card by Pach Bros. , New York. English actor, producer and theatre manager John Hare (1844-1921) made his stage debut in Liverpool in 1864, and his first London appearance the next year. Known for comic roles in his early years, he became one of England's most famous and distinguished character actors, especially known for his starring role in Sidney Grindy's A Pair of Spectacles. He was the original manager of London's Garrick Theatre (1889-1895). Hare toured the US several times, making his final visit in 1900-1901. He was knighted in 1907. Although Hare retired from the stage in 1912, he appeared in three silent films later in that decade. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
