He expresses in a typed letter that he can not "Take on any more responsibilities of this nature" regarding charity and organizations
Typed Letter signed: "John Mills", 1p, 5x8. Richmond Hill, Surrey (England), 1950 December 8. On personal letterhead to E. Donald Grant, The Thames Valley Revue Club, Whitton, Middlesex. In full: "Thank you for your letter. I very much regret that I am unable to help you. I am, at the moment, interested in and connected with sixteen Amateur Dramatic Societies and Clubs, most of which I help to support financially. If the gentlemen of the inland revenue were more kindly disposed, I should be in a happier position, I should be in a happier position, but, as things are, I have had to reluctantly refuse to take on any more responsibilities of this nature. I hope that you understand, and that you don't feel I am being unsympathetic. Yours sincerely." Mills (1908-2005) starred in British films of the 1930s, including Born for Glory (1935). He became better known to American audiences through Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). During World War II, Mills made inspirational war-themed films like In Which We Serve (1942). Postwar successes included Great Expectations (1946) and Hobson's Choice (1954). He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Ryan's Daughter (1970). Mills, who is the father of actresses Hayley and Juliet Mills, was appropriately cast as Gus, the theatrical cat in the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats (1998). Lightly creased near top edge. File hole in upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
