On black-bordered mourning paper to "Dear Sir". In full: "I
shall be happy to see you some day next week if that be convenient to you. I am
at present, I regret to say, confined to my bed with pneumonia, but am getting
better, and hope to be all right again soon. I will let you know soon, I hope.
When I am better, fix a day for which it would be convenient for you to come to
lunch at 11:30. Sincerely". Sir Joseph Fayrer (1824-1907), an English
surgeon, served the British military in campaigns in the Mediterranean and South
Asia. He taught surgery at the Medical College in Calcutta
(1859-1872). A member of the Royal Society who was made a baron in 1896,
Fayrer wrote extensively on Indian medical practices and on the poisonous
snakes of that country. Fine condition.
