SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK
Rare signed 7x8¾ b/w photo of golfer Sir Michael Bonallack kicking up a divot in heavy
rough with an iron. Bonallack had five wins each on England's Amateur Championship
and the English Amateur in the 1960s and early 1970s and was twice lead amateur at the
English Open.
Photograph signed "Michael Bonallack" in blue ink. B/w, 7x8¾ overall, 6½x8¼ image, one
surface. An amateur golfer who never gave any thought to becoming a pro, British golfer
Bonallack (1934-2023) was nevertheless inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in
2000 for his lifetime achievements in golf. Bonallack pretty much defined amateur play in
England in the 1960s and early 1970s with five wins each on England's Amateur
Championship (1961, 1965, 1968, 1969 and 1970) and the English Amateur (1962, 1963,
1965, 1967 and 1968) and claiming leading amateur honors at the 1968 and 1971 English
Opens... and all while keeping a full-time sales job in his family business. He was later
Secretary of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and was knighted in 1998.
Lightly creased, not visible head-on. Stray pencil line at upper portion of right margin. Ink
photographs stamps, pencil notation (unknown hand) and printed teletype (dated 8/5/57)
affixed on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
