MORTIMER B. DAVIS
Influential French-Canadian businessman signs name in black ink on personal stationary
Typed letter signed: "Mortimer B. Davis" in black ink. 1 page, 5x8. Written on personal letterhead. Montreal, Quebec. May 4, 1922. In full: "Dear Sir: As requested in you communication of the 27th ulto. [ultimo (previous month)], I take pleasure in sending you my autograph. Yours very truly". French-Canadian businessman and philanthropist Mortimer B. Davis (1866-1928) began his career in his family's cigar business S. Davis and Sons, and after a few years of successful building he was named the President of the American Tobacco Company of Canada and under his guidance the company bought the British American Tobacco Company, the American Tobacco Company, and the Imperial Tobacco Company of England; this created the new Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada Limited with Davis as their first president. Davis served as a member of the Montreal Board of Trade and the Montreal Stock Exchange and as the director of Union Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Henry Corby Distillery, Crown Trust Company, Empire Tobacco, the Nova Scotia Silber Cobalt Mining Company and the Consolidated Asbestos Mining Company. He became the first Canadian-born Jew to be knighted, which he was by King George V in 1916. Much of Davis' fortune went to building new temples, sanatoriums, and hospitals after his death. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Light surface creases. Slight ink smearing. Otherwise, fine condition.
