Typed letter signed: "Mortimer B. Davis" in black ink. 1 page,
5x8. Written on personal letterhead. Montreal, Quebec. May 4, 1922. In
full: "Dear Sir: As requested in you communication of the 27th ulto.
[ultimo (previous month)], I take pleasure in sending you my autograph.
Yours very truly". French-Canadian businessman and philanthropist
Mortimer B. Davis (1866-1928) began his career in his family's cigar
business S. Davis and Sons, and after a few years of successful building he
was named the President of the American Tobacco Company of Canada and
under his guidance the company bought the British American Tobacco Company,
the American Tobacco Company, and the Imperial Tobacco Company of England; this
created the new Imperial Tobacco Company of Canada Limited with Davis as
their first president. Davis served as a member of the Montreal Board of Trade
and the Montreal Stock Exchange and as the director of Union Bank, Royal Bank of
Canada, Henry Corby Distillery, Crown Trust Company, Empire Tobacco, the Nova
Scotia Silber Cobalt Mining Company and the Consolidated Asbestos Mining
Company. He became the first Canadian-born Jew to be knighted, which he was
by King George V in 1916. Much of Davis' fortune went to building new
temples, sanatoriums, and hospitals after his death. Normal mailing folds.
