NOËL COWARD
He writes about the changes that are being made for the Theatrical Garden Party
Typed Letter signed: "Noël Coward" in grey ink, 1½p front and verso, 8x10. 1950 April 25, London, England. On stationery of "Theatre and Film Carnival/ Roehampton Club, Roehampton S.W.15", to "Dear Jimmy Edwards". In full: "I am writing to let you know that this year we are making a number of changes in the organization and  presentation of the Theatrical Garden Party. We are making and extra effort yo raise funds for 'Our Own Charity', The Actors Orphanage, and this year the Garden Party, which is being held for the first time under its new title 'THE THEATRE AND FILM CARNIVAL' will extend over two days, Friday and Saturday the 2nd and 3rd June. On the Friday afternoon we hope to duplicate the atmosphere and appeal of previous theatrical garden parties, while on Saturday afternoon and evening, we are making a special effort to bring in the general public. We are planning many new attractions, and the whole event is being organized on a scale to appeal to the public, yet at the same time to maintain its distinctive character. We shall be asking you to make a special effort to be with us on either or both of the two days. I appreciate that, dependent upon your stage or film commitments, it may be difficult for you to be present on the Friday and the Saturday. P.T.O. However, in order to plan the various attractions, and to see that every one of our stars has the opportunity of making a contribution to the success of the Carnival, I am anxious to be sure that you will be with us. Would you please, therefore, try and make a point of keeping free the Friday and /or the Saturday. We shall be in touch with you over the details of your participation in the Carnival during eth next few weeks, but I wanted to give you ample warning of the date and our plans. Yours," The brilliant plays of British playwright, actor, producer, and composer Noël Coward (1899-1973) include Private Lives (1930) and Blithe Spirit (1941). Coward also wrote book musicals, revues, short stories, and a novel. The third (unfinished) volume of his autobiography, Past Conditional, was published posthumously in 1986. In 1943, Coward won a Special Academy Award for In Which We Serve, a WWII movie in which he starred, wrote the script, produced, directed, and composed the musical score.
