NORMAN ANGELL. TLS: "Norman Angell", 1p, 8x6½. London, 1914 September 5. On imprinted letterhead to Miss L.A. Grout, School of Social Science, Boston, U.S.A. Begins: "Dear Madam". In full: "I should like very much indeed to have had the privilege of lecturing at your Society but my movements [are] so uncertain to allow me to make any arrangements for the [fu]ture. Perhaps later on I shall be able to do so. Belive me, Yours sincerely". In 1910, British journalist Norman Angell (1872-1967) rose to fame with The Great Illusion, in which he reasoned that the common economic interests of nations make war futile. Knighted in 1931, Angell was awarded the 1933 Nobel Peace Prize. He continued to write and lecture into the 1950s. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Irregularly cut and torn at lower margin, touching the second "l" of Angell. 1x1½-inch paper loss at upper right margin, touching imprinted address, ½x¾-inch paper loss at upper margin to left of imprinted address. Pinhead-size hole at crossfolds affects one word of text, ½-inch hole has removed a portion of type (bracketed above). Slightly soiled, ink blot at blank portion. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper margin.
