Typed letter to a Mrs. Wainwright on stationery of the Hotel Chatham of New York City, signed by Angell. In it, he accepts an invitation to meet her and her family in her home.
Typed letter signed "Norman Angell", 1 page, 7¼x9¾, on stationery of the Hotel Chatham, New York City. Dated "10 Feb". Addressed to "Mrs. Wainwright". In full: "My dear Mrs. Wainwright: I arrive at Scranton to-morrow Thursday at 6.30. I shall dine on the train so that, as you are kind enough to suggest, that will give me time to change for the lecture. I am looking forward very much - after so many accidents - to meeting your family again, brief and hurried as, unfortunately for me, the visit is. Yours very sincerely." Angell maintained a fairly sizable correspondence with this unidentified "Mrs. Wainwright", who would often open her home to him when he was in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area. In 1910, the British journalist (1872-1967 , born Ralph Norman Angell-Lane in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England) rose to fame with The Great Illusion, in which he reasoned that the common economic interests of nations make war futile. Knighted in 1931, Angell was awarded the 1933 Nobel Peace Prize. He continued to write and lecture into the 1950s. Lightly toned and creased. Ink stain in upper right corner. Folded twice and unfolded. ½" horizontal tear at upper fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
