SIR OSBERT SITWELL
Book page from an unidentified limited edition book, signed by the author in blue ink
Book page signed "Osbert Sitwell" in blue ink. Red pencil notation in bottom left corner and lead pencil notations on verso, both in unknown hand. 4¼x6¼. This page was clipped from the 187th copy of an unidentified 260-copy limited edition book. British author Sitwell (1892-1969), born Francis Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, is best remembered for his nostalgic five-volume autobiography - Left Hand! Right Hand! (1944), The Scarlet Tree (1946), Great Morning! (1947), Laughter in the Next Room (1948) and Noble Essences (1950) - as well as poems and novels like 1926's Before the Bombardment. During his life, though, he was also known as an acerbic and argumentative figure on the British literary scene, as well as a snob who detested the middle class. The 5th Baronet of Renishaw Hall after the death of his father George Sitwell in 1943, Osbert knew "everyone who mattered" in Britain, from Queen Elizabeth, Consort of King George VI, on down. Osbert came from a literary family; his sister was the flamboyant and even more controversial Dame Edith Sitwell, and his brother was author Sacheverell Sitwell, who assumed the baronetcy of Renishaw Hall on Osbert's death. Lightly creased. Signature is lightly haloed but legible. Irregular left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
