RUDOLPH BING and DOROTHY A. AHRENS
11x14 Dorothy Ahrens pencil sketch of the English opera impresario, signed and dated by Bing in 1950. This sketch was drawn and signed the year that Bing took the reins of the New York Metropolitan Opera Company, a job he would hold for 22 years.
Original art inscribed and signed: "To Dorothy Ahrens/Rudolph Bing/March 1950" and "D.A.AHRENS/1950". B/w pencil sketch, 8¼x10 sketch on 11x14 sheet of heavy paper. RUDOLPH BING (1902-1997) was an English opera impresario. He was born to a Jewish family and immigrated to England in 1934 with the rise of Nazism. He was appointed the general manager of the Glyndebourne Opera Company in 1935 and, in 1947, helped to organize the Edinburgh International Festival, now known the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the largest performing arts festival of its kind in the world. He was named general manager of the New York Metropolitan Opera Company in 1950, where he remained until 1972. He guaranteed that company's ticket sales by booking Italian Romantic operas over other kinds of performances and more modern music, a move that earned him criticism. He was knighted in 1971. DOROTHY AHRENS sketched many stars of the 1940s and 1950s, then invited them to autograph her art. Lightly toned and creased. Small piece has been torn off lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
