SIR THEODORE MARTIN
Poet Sir Theodore Martin wrote this letter in 1876 to recommend a friend to Great Britain's Commission of the Peace. Martin wrote a biography of Prince Albert and a book of reminiscence of Queen Victoria.
Autograph Letter signed: "Theodore Martin", 2p, 5x8. Westminster, 1876 May 18. To Edward Brun. In full: "My dear Sir In talking with my firend W I. Beale of Bryntyrive [?], I find that he would like to be put upon the Commission of the Peace. He is now in a manner permanently a resident in Wales, & would like the occupation. When it was pressed on him some years ago, he declined, not expecting to be much in Wales. You, I believe, are in a position to suggest his name to the Lord Lieutenant of the County, and I think it would be regarded as an act of kindness if you would do so. Mr. Beale, from his legal experience, would be a gain to the Bench of Justices. Believe me my dear Sir truly yours". Martin (1816-1919), born and educated in Scotland, practiced law in London but made his reputation as a translator of poetry from Danish, German (Goethe) and Latin (Horace). At Queen Victoria's request, he undertook a 5-volume biography of the late Prince Albert, published 1874-1880. He became a close confidant of the Queen, and later wrote a volume of reminiscences, Queen Victoria as I Knew Her, published privately in 1902 and publicly, with King Edward VII's permission, in 1908. Martin married Shakespearean actress Helena Faucit (1817-1898) in 1851. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
