Sir THOMAS BEECHAM (1879-1961) founded two orchestras: the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1932 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1946. At the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, he held the posts of Artistic Director from 1932 and General Director from 1935 to 1939. Spending the war years in America, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in January 1942, conducting 58 performances over three seasons. Beecham was a prolific recording artist with hundreds of recordings. He conducted his last operas in Buenos Aires in 1958 and died in London in 1961. Anglican prelate ERNEST NEWTON SHARPE (1866-1949) served several churches before becoming Canon of St Paul's Cathedral. He was Archdeacon of London (1930-1947). Toned around edges. Surface creases. Edges slightly worn and frayed. Adhesive residue on verso confliction with Sharpe's signature. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
