SIR THOMAS HENRY COTTON
Album leaf signed by three-time British Open winner Sir Thomas Henry
Cotton
Signature: "Henry Cotton". 4½x3½ with rounded right edges.
British golfer Cotton (1907-1988) turned pro in 1924 and, 10 years later,
won his first of three British Open victories in 1934 (the others were in
1937 and 1948). This victory was remarkable in part because it ended a
full decade of American domination of the British Open. Cotton also won 12
other European championships between 1930 and 1954 and was a member of Great
Britain's Ryder Cup four times (and captain twice). When he wasn't playing the
game (and living the high life), he was writing about the game, including the
books Studying the Golf Game (1964), A History of Golf (1973), and
Thanks for the Game (1980). Cotton was inducted into the World Golf
Hall of Fame in 1980 and was knighted in 1988. Lightly toned, soiled,
stained and creased. Ink transference, possibly from a postmarked envelope (does
not touch signature). Neatly cut from album at left edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
