SIR THOMAS BIDDULPH
The Master of the Household of Queen Victoria and Army General signs this letter thanking the recipient for a book they sent to the queen
Autograph letter signed: "Thos Biddulph" in black ink. 4¾x6½. Balmoral, October 5, 1869. In full: "Sir, I have had the honour of receiving and of submitting to the Queen the book you have forwarded "In Memoriam" and am directed to thank you for your attention. I am, sir, Yr. obedt. humble servt. "Sir Thomas Myddelton Biddulph (1809-1878) was an officer in the British Army and courtier. In 1837 and 1841 his brother Robert unsuccessfully tried to have him elected as Member of Parliament for the Denbigh Boroughs. On July 16, 1851 Biddulph was appointed Master of the Household to Queen Victoria. He was made an Extra Equerry to the Queen on July 16, 1854. In March 1863 Biddulph was made a Knight Commander of the Civil Division of the Order of the Bath. On March 3, 1866 he resigned as Master of the Household and was appointed joint Keeper of the Privy Purse with Lieutenant-General Charles Grey. He was also appointed Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall that year. He was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1873 and full general 1877. In December 1877 Biddulph was sworn of the Privy Council. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Ink gradually lightens from the top of the page. Affixed to notebook sheet with clippings about Balmoral Castle. Otherwise, fine condition.
