Signature on clipped letterhead of the British Antarctic Survey, to which a printed biography and three British Antarctic Territory stamps are affixed.
Signature: "V. E. Fuchs/1972", 4½x3. Signed on clipped letterhead of the British Antarctic Survey, to which a concise printed biography of Fuchs and three stamps from the British Antarctic Territory are affixed. Geologist Vivian E. Fuchs (1908-1999) led a 12-person Trans-Antarctic Expedition on the first land crossing of Antarctica.Starting from the Weddell Sea, he reached Scott Station on March 2, 1958, after traveling 2,158 miles in 98 days. This land crossing proved conclusively that under the polar ice sheet there existed the single continent of Antarctica. Fuchs, who directed the British Antarctic survey from 1958 to 1973, was knighted in 1958. The British Antarctic Territory created in 1962, applies to a wedge of Antarctica extending to the South Pole. Many nations consider sovereign claims to territory in Antarctic to be a violation of the Antarctic Treaty of 1961. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to the page). Otherwise, fine condition.
