SIR VIVIAN E. FUCHS
The Geologist signs on a page with The Tran-Antarctic Expedition on the letterhead, and pens an explanatory note at the bottom of the page.
Autograph Note signed: "Vivian Fuchs/1989", 6½x8 page with letterhead of The Trans-Antarctic Expedition, London. In lower margin, Fuchs has added: "Written on a piece of the 1955-58 expedition paper. No photograph available, but you may like to have this." Geologist Fuchs (1908-1999) led a 12-person Transantarctic Expedition on the first land crossing of Antarctica. Starting from the Weddell Sea, he reached Scott Station on March 2, 1958, after traveling 2,158 miles in 98 days. This land crossing proved conclusively that under the polar ice sheet there existed the single continent of Antarctica. Fuchs, who directed the British Antarctic survey from 1958 to 1973, was knighted in 1958. Fine condition.
