[SIR WALTER SCOTT]
The poet shown in this engraving sitting in a chair with his cane
Engraving, unsigned. B/w, 9¾x14 overall, image 6x7½ (one surface). Engraving from a painting by William Humphrey. Published in London in June 1844 by H. Graves & Co., "Printsetter to Her Majesty". Scott's name imprinted at lower margin. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) is considered to be the "father of the historical novel". His works include Waverly (1814), Rob Roy (1818), Ivanhoe(1819), Kenilworth (1821) and The Talisman (1825) as well as the narrative poem, The Lady of the Lake. When Scott's authorship, which had been suspected but not proven, became known, he became the first British novelist to become a public figure. Scott was created a baronet in 1820. Lightly creased and soiled at blank areas. Tape remnants at upper blank margin, two nicks at blank right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
